About Us
Madera County Animal Shelter is an animal control government agency responsible for the protection and care of animals within Madera County.  Animal Control in Madera County was started in 1948, and  built its first animal shelter in 1954.  The current building was approved for construction in 1973.

Our Purpose
Our purpose is to shelter unwanted and stray animals; to enforce county, state, and federal laws and ordinances; to provide animal control services which improve the overall health and safety of the community; to investigate animal-related cruelty, neglect, and accidents; to facilitate vaccination compliance and dog licensing; and to provide humane pet education to the public.

Our Work
We impound and shelter over 8,000 animals per year of every species imaginable.

Services and Programs
Our services include: Law enforcement, accident investigation, bite reports, disease control, licensing, cruelty investigations, and community education.  We also provide humane euthanasia and disposal of pets brought in by private parties.  Programs currently in place include: animal adoptions to approved homes, Pet Partnership with Marin Humane which rescues hundreds of animals from our shelter every year, a Spay and Neuter program that helps those who are struggling financially to alter their animals, low-cost vaccination clinics throughout the year, monthly licensing opportunities in Bass Lake for the mountain residents, weekly public education articles in the Madera Tribune, Pet of the Week photos and biographies, Walmart Very Best Pet Network--display maintained on adoptable animals at the pet department, and Lost and Found counseling and services.

Volunteers
We are constantly recruiting volunteers.  We prefer responsible adults with a great desire to help unwanted animals.  We have a variety of tasks including clerical, kennel services, health care, foster care, media relations, dog training, dog walking, pet socialization and much more.  We try to match the tasks with the volunteers skill level and knowledge.
