The Central Valley Coalition for Animals is pleased to partner with Animal-Kind International in supporting the Uganda Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (USPCA).
The USPCA is the only companion animal protection organization in the country of Uganda. Appropriately called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is a beautiful country with exceptionally friendly people and some of the world's most incredible attractions but it is also a place of extreme poverty.
"The Haven" is the USPCA's shelter in Kampala (Uganda's capitol) housing nearly 100 dogs and cats - some of whom will be adopted into loving homes. Running an animal shelter in a developing country is full of challenges. For instance, commercial dog and cat food is not available and the staff must cook food daily for the shelter's 100 inhabitants. Transportation, communication and simply functioning are all hampered by issues which we don't understand in the West. Simply put, the USPCA staff and volunteers work miracles every day to help animals in need in and around Kampala.
The USPCA has one Field Officer, Remmy Mukulu, who rescues animals in need, conducts humane education programs for school children and organizes spay and neuter clinics. Knowing that his work is appreciated by friends in the U.S. helps to keep Remmy and all the USPCA staff motivated.
The USPCA's most famous resident is "Hope", a scrappy little dog rescued several months after she was run over by a van. The incident left Hope unable to use her back legs and, remarkably, she learned to walk on her front legs - balancing her hind end in the air. Hope now shares a kennel with "Nelson", a beautiful brown dog who runs as fast as any other dog at The Haven, despite the fact that he is missing two legs.
Please consider supporting the USPCA through a donation (specify your gift is for the USPCA) or by purchasing a copy of "The Story of Hope", the children's book published by Fountain Publishers in Uganda. 100% of your donation and the proceeds of sales from Hope's book will go directly to the USPCA. You can also make a donation on Animal Kind International's website.
