Coalition Ends Super Adoption
After 11 Successful Events

December 2011

Dear Friends,

We have decided not to continue Super Adoption and this letter will explain our decision.

Beginning in November 2003, the Central Valley Coalition for Animals hosted 11 Super Adoption events which
found homes for more than 2,400 dogs and cats.  Each event was marked by wonderful cooperation among all
the exceptional people involved in animal rescue and adoption in the valley.   The event demonstrated how much
we can accomplish by working together and it has been a great privilege for the Super Adoption committee to
work with all of you.

Despite the daily heroic efforts of our animal rescue community, the Central Valley continues to have one of the
highest shelter euthanasia rates in the nation.   In 2010, 95,863 animals were taken in by the main municipal
shelters in Madera, Fresno, Kings and Tulare Counties.  64,203 of these dogs and cats were destroyed.  It is
apparent that we cannot rescue or adopt our way out of this homeless pet crisis.

Because the aim of our organization is to support our shelters and rescue community, we have determined that
our limited resources are better applied to The Big Fix, our low cost spay/neuter assistance project.  Other
geographic areas have demonstrated that we can move toward becoming a “no kill” community if pet guardians
are given the opportunity to fix their animals at an affordable cost.   The more opportunities all of us create for
people to spay and neuter their dogs and cats, the closer we will be to decreasing shelter intake.

The Big Fix was launched in December 2010 and we have now spayed and neutered nearly 1,000 animal
companions.  Our work to date supports the conclusion that a targeted approach does directly impact shelter
intake numbers, as reflected in the changes seen at the Porterville shelter.

For the last several years, Super Adoption has been administered by a committee consisting of only a few
people.  Each year, we found the cost of the event increasing, the ability to obtain sponsorships more
challenging and - most importantly - the number of animals coming to our event dramatically increasing.  It has
become apparent that we can better serve the animal shelter and rescue community by devoting our time, fund-
raising efforts and resources to The Big Fix.

You don't have to go to a shelter.  Most groups have off-site
adoptions at locations such as Petco.

Please don't breed or buy while homeless animals die.
